The current industrial action is about pay, equality, workload and casualisation. In past disputes many staff in HE have felt uncomfortable about taking action over pay feeling, perhaps, that there are others in society who have greater economic hardship. However after over a decade of real-terms pay cuts and in the current climate of rising inflation the need to address pay has become unavoidable
The truth is that we are not all in this together. While our members have seen their pay cut by 25% since 2009, university vice-chancellors and senior management have been collecting six-figure salaries.
Prices have continued to rise since we submitted our claim- RPI has averaged at 10% so far in 2022, and the employer has made an offer of 3%.
